1. Maps and navigation
Google Maps is must-have number one. Download the city map offline in advance and navigation works even without internet. For driving, Waze shows traffic and cameras in real time.
2. Translator
Google Translate removes the language barrier entirely. Photo translation, voice translation, offline dictionaries — all lifesavers abroad. Be sure to download the offline pack for your language before the trip.
3. Connectivity
WhatsApp is the most universal messenger in the world. Telegram is second and great for local info channels. Keep both.
4. Money
A Revolut card or similar gives good exchange rates and no foreign fees. Google Pay lets you pay by phone almost everywhere.
5. Stays and tickets
For hotels and apartments — Booking and Airbnb. For flights — aggregators like Skyscanner. Keep them on your phone to show bookings without printouts.
6-10. What else helps
Entertainment on the road: Spotify with offline playlists and Netflix with downloaded shows are irreplaceable on planes and trains. YouTube for local guides. And ChatGPT — surprisingly useful on a trip: ask what local dish to try or plan a day's route.
The main tip
Download and set everything up at home while you have fast Wi-Fi. On location, especially day one, internet can be slow or expensive. Five minutes of prep saves hours of stress.
