Britain is a country where everything runs through apps — transport, payments, even entry to some museums. Here is a set that will make you feel like a local in London and beyond.
Transport — the most important part
The London Underground and buses are a science of their own, but Citymapper makes it simple: enter your destination and it shows the best route to the minute, including changes. For intercity trips you need Trainline to buy rail tickets (much cheaper in advance). Google Maps also handles UK public transport well.
Important: on London transport you can pay with a normal bank card or phone via Google Pay — no separate travel card needed. Just tap in and out.
Taxis
Uber works great across the UK. Alternatives are Bolt, often cheaper, and FreeNow for classic London black cabs.
Food
Food delivery in the UK is held by three apps: Deliveroo (premium restaurants), Uber Eats and Just Eat. Deliveroo is seen as the highest quality, Just Eat the most widespread.
Money and connectivity
Britain has nearly gone cashless — you pay by card or phone everywhere, even for street coffee. For good rates get Revolut or Monzo (a local online bank). For calls and chat keep WhatsApp, widely used, plus Telegram if you prefer it.
Before you fly
The must-haves: Google Maps and Citymapper for transport, Google Pay for contactless, WhatsApp for contact. Add taxi and delivery on arrival.
